This is an exciting time to be a graduate student at the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) at Orfalea College of Business (OCOB) , ranked the ‘Best in the West’ Public Master’s University in the Western US for 24 years in a row by U.S. News and World Report. Why? Because it is growing—forging new programs and redefining existing ones.
The college offers intellectual challenge and exceptional value in stunning surroundings. Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles in the #1 ranked college town of San Luis Obispo (SLO) OCOB excels in graduate business education. The hands-on teaching philosophy renders graduates exceptionally prepared for work. Accredited by the AACSB, Orfalea College boasts strong employment rates, with graduates hired by companies such as KPMG, EY, Bank of America, Tenet Healthcare, AT&T, Apple, Oracle, and Google.
OCOB has adapted to meet the need of today’s economy, with several recently launched specialized graduate programs to give graduates the extra skills necessary to be career ready and successful. The college has strong industry connections with Silicon Valley—less than three hours away by car. Thus, the curriculum of its specialized programs has been developed to align with industry needs. For example, given the soaring demand for analytics professionals, OCOB launched an innovative program in business analytics crafted with extensive consultation with the business analytics advisory board. The new, industry-supported M.S. in Packaging Value Chain is the first program of its kind to be offered in the business college that will prepare students for careers in packaging and help advance careers of professionals in the packaging industry.
The Master’s of Science in Business Analytics is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary business program that offers a holistic approach to data analytics by combining an analytical mindset and technical skill set. With particular emphasis on advanced statistical modeling, data visualization, and communication, students are equipped to harness the power of data by asking the right questions for analysis and creating actionable intelligence.
Given the college’s intellectual strength in data analytics, it is poised to become the hub of various other graduate programs. In addition to the M.S. in Business Analytics program, relevant data analytics electives are offered in the MBA, the M.S. in Economics, and the M.S. in Packaging Value Chain. All master’s programs can be completed within a year.
The new, industry-supported M.S. in Packaging Value Chain prepares students for careers in packaging and helps advance careers of professionals in the packaging industry. It is the only program of its kind in the world to be offered in a business college.
The California climate, with an average of 315 days of sun per year, offers abundant outdoor recreation. When not swimming, kayaking, or surfing at the beach, Cal Poly students are often found biking to class or hiking in the nearby 6,500 acres of environmentally protected open space. Nearby coastal towns provide relaxing day trips, with the famous redwoods of Big Sur just a bit further north.
San Luis Obispo’s downtown bustles with cafes, craft beer breweries, a weekly nighttime farmer’s market, and many good restaurants. With just under 50,000 residents, SLO is community-oriented, safe, and friendly.
