International English Language Summer Camp Celebrates 35th Anniversary

destination-canada-logo-mdSince 1980, Destination Canada has provided English language education to international students in a fun, summer camp setting in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa.

The program combines education and recreation in a safe, relaxed environment with opportunities to learn inside and outside the classroom. Destination Canada is family-run, lending a personal touch to the experience and making it an ideal choice for cautious parents.

When asked to describe the key benefits of the program, Destination Canada President Brian Pilgrim summarized: “Their English improves, they go home safe and secure with a better understanding of Canadian culture and with friendships with kids from all around the world. It’s a pretty neat package.”

The Classroom Experience

Parents can opt for two, three, or four-week programs that include twenty-five hours of English instruction per week. Classroom instruction consists of two learning sessions emphasizing written and conversational skills. The morning session is teacher-driven and combines language instruction with information about Canadian culture, language, and customs. The afternoon session is more informal and allows students to put their knowledge into practice.

A 15:1 student-teacher ratio means there is plenty of individual attention, and students are grouped based on their age and language level. “All of our teachers are certified professional Canadian teachers who teach in Canadian high schools and elementary schools throughout the year,” added Mr. Pilgrim.

Sports and Recreation

The late afternoon is dedicated to activities which complement classroom learning. The program’s location at Carleton University means students have access to world-class facilities, including indoor tennis courts, soccer fields, a gymnasium, and an Olympic-size pool.

In the evening, students can choose from supervised off-campus activities like bowling, movies, or a trip to the water park. Weekend excursions include visiting Toronto, Montreal, and Niagara Falls for first-hand immersion in Canadian culture.

Destination Canada and Latin America

Latin America has been well represented in the student population since the program’s inception, with thousands of Latin American students in attendance in previous years, and Mr. Pilgrim welcomes more to join the program this summer.

In addition to the rich academic and recreational programs, Destination Canada also offers full medical coverage and even helps parents with the visa process and all required paperwork.
