Encouraging Girls to Follow Their Dreams for 115 Years
As the only all-girls boarding school in Manitoba, Balmoral Hall School ensures that its students begin their academic careers with the tools necessary to succeed in primary and secondary education and eventually continue on to the universities of their choice – a goal achieved by all of the school’s graduating seniors.
“We take university preparation very seriously. Our goal is to ensure that we have given our students the tools they need to identify the best university for them, and in this we are very successful,” stated Executive Director Tina Alto.
With programs designed to instill confidence, competence, and a feeling of connectedness, Balmoral Hall has been a pillar of prestigious all-girls university preparatory education for 115 years. Located in Winnipeg, a bustling prairie city of nearly 1 million people, the school draws boarding students to its unique environment – known as much for its stunning seasons as for its robust reputation.
Supporting International Students from Orientation to ESL
Parents of international students can rest assured that their children are safe and secure. Faculty and staff take safety very seriously, with proactive measures in place such as full supervision when students leave campus for excursions. “We have perfected communications to make sure parents have the peace of mind of knowing how their child is faring. We do a really great job of dealing with the emotional and social well-being of the girls that come to Balmoral Hall,” commented Ms. Alto.
Balmoral Hall offers international students a smooth transition with intensive ESL programs and a family-inclusive International Orientation Week. When they arrive, international students are given a thorough English language assessment, from which the school designs a personalized ESL program for them. ESL students are integrated into regular academic classes, receiving extra support from ESL tutors.
International boarding students may begin their studies with an intensive three-week summer ESL program, or a fun conversational and cultural program designed for younger students. “The class could look at Canadian sports, arts, celebrities – it’s a pretty fun class and it’s completely focused on getting comfortable speaking English,” explained Ms. Alto.
For older students, the intensive program balances rigorous English classes with fun cultural activities in Winnipeg. Summer ESL students have the exciting opportunity to experience the school’s boarding facility, featuring CAD $2 million in recent renovations. While in residence, students can familiarize themselves with surrounding areas of urban Winnipeg.
A Place Where Every Girl Pursues Her Dreams
With alumnae ranging from Grammy-winning artists to established judges, politicians, and a CNN newscaster, Balmoral Hall girls are fully supported in following their dreams and pursuing their passions.
“Although we are an academically rigorous university preparatory school, this educational experience is about the individual. We are going to challenge her to be her very best, but at the end of it all we are her family while she’s away from home and that’s what a family can count on,” concluded Ms. Alto.
