North Broward Preparatory School: Holistic College-Prep Education
“We encourage families to think about education in terms of end goals, we want them to begin with the end in mind,” said North Broward High School Assistant Principal, Priscila Torres, former Principal of the American School in Brasília. “We focus on the education and development of the whole child and our school offers an unmatched experience for our students.”
North Broward Preparatory School (NBPS) is a Pre-K3 to 12th grade college preparatory school in Coconut Creek, Florida with a very diverse student population where over 34 nationalities are represented. It fosters critical thinking skills and provides a personalized learning approach for all types of learners. The school offers the best in globally-focused studies tailoring the academic experience to all needs by offering a wide set of courses, including Advanced Placement (AP), the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB), college prep, honors, and classes for students with mild learning disabilities.
North Broward Preparatory School is part of the Nord Anglia Education Family of Schools. The Nord Anglia Education family consists of 42 international schools, located in 15 countries, and educates over 32,000 students from pre-school through to the end of secondary education. Each school is a top tier educational institution committed to providing students with the highest quality learning enhanced through unique global experiences.
Teachers continuously attend professional development opportunities to further develop as educators. These opportunities include experiences, such as participating in Harvard University’s Visible Thinking workshop, attending and presenting at national and international conferences, leading workshops, and participating in Professional Learning Communities both on campus and virtually. Teachers, along with the leadership team, cultivate a true learning community that focuses on each child’s strengths and growth opportunities. “Our students and teachers stand together in the process of discovery,” said Assistant Headmaster Bruce Fawcett. “Everyone is constantly learning and is excited about the experience of learning.” It comes as no surprise that 100% of North Broward’s students are college-bound after graduation.
The school relies on cutting-edge technology and methods to engage students in the learning process. Laptops and iPads are consistently used in classrooms to support learning in all subjects—including art—with specific classes dedicated to branding, design thinking, animation, film and coding. Students are able to take advantage of more than 230 courses in the high school, as well as personalized academic support.
The state-of-the-art facilities include residential boarding dorms, five tennis courts, three swimming pools, and classroom buildings that are located around a beautiful lake. North Broward is conveniently located a few minutes away from three international airports; Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Direct flights to most destinations in the world are minutes away from the picturesque facilities. The school offers two boarding facilities; an off campus option fifteen minutes away from the main campus and an on campus option where students may conveniently walk to their classes. Current Brazilian students particularly enjoy making American friends and learning about the American culture while being relatively close to home. North Broward prides itself on safety with virtually no crime. Additional campus security is present allowing community members to feel very safe and secure at all times.
Ms. Torres explained why Brazilian parents find North Broward particularly attractive. “We have a balanced approach towards education. We focus on sports, arts, and community service in addition to academics. We embrace cultural diversity and promote a well-rounded worldview. When parents come to visit their children, they notice a mindset change from ‘me-me-me’ to ‘I want to give back.’”
