Academic Excellence in a Family-Environment: The Linsly School

A Tradition of Excellence

The Linsly School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day and boarding school for students in grades five through twelve, located in Wheeling, West Virginia. Founded in 1814 by Noah Linsly, Linsly continues to prepare students to thrive in college and beyond 200 years later. Today, Linsly is a school with a diverse student body, welcoming students from all over the world , and offering a traditional program that emphasizes academic excellence and character development.

A Linsly Student

Linsly has “No Quit” and “No Cut” policy. “We are a school that talks a lot about character, leadership, and role-modeling,” said Headmaster Justin Zimmerman. Linsly students stick to their commitments, but they also get the support from faculty and each other needed to get through challenging experiences. The school sets the bar high for academic excellence. Its academic program is rigorous and aims to challenge the individual student. AP courses are available as students prepare to attend some of the top universities in the United States.

Linsly offers a warm, family-like educational environment where students are active and engaged in the community. Boarding students live in one of four dormitories on campus that each have faculty homes attached to them and eat dinner together in a family-style setting each evening,

Wheeling is in the Ohio Valley, which borders Pennsylvania and Ohio. It is a beautiful, safe, and family-oriented part of the US. It is close to major cities including Pittsburgh and Columbus, where students can travel and go on field trips. The quaint, historic campus is bordered by a creek, creating a safe, tucked-away neighborhood campus atmosphere.

Home Away from Home

International students thrive at Linsly. Faculty members live on campus and are readily available to support them in all areas of student life. There is an Advisor Program in which each student is paired with a faculty member. The advisor helps the student with everything from picking classes to adjusting to boarding school.

The American Language and Culture program for international students is designed specifically for students from abroad to help them and their families transition to boarding school in the US. All students live, socialize, and study with each other. In such a tight-knit environment, international students truly learn about American culture and master the English language. Many international students who make friends with Linsly day students have the opportunity to spend time with American families off campus – including being invited to family dinner and sometimes even making arrangements to spend weekends or holidays with them.

Getting into Linsly

Linsly accepts well-rounded, hard working international students with a strong drive to succeed. It is a requirement for prospective students to be proficient in English before arriving at Linsly therefore they need to take the TOEFL or SAT. If it appears to be a match, the students are interviewed and admission is determined. The Linsly School is excited to welcome Brazilian students and hopes to expand its recruiting activities in South America in the coming years.
