Hands-On Learning at the University of Idaho College of Business and Economics
At the University of Idaho, the internationally accredited College of Business and Economics (CBE) attracts diverse and talented students who share a drive and passion for innovation, teamwork, and solving real‐world business problems.
CBE Dean Mario Reyes highlighted some of the many reasons why students from across the globe come to the University of Idaho for a premier business education: “We have an innovative business curriculum that emphasizes team building, group dynamics, integration across business disciplines, and hands‐on learning.” Experiential learning is a fundamental component of all of the CBE’s programs; students “learn business by doing business.”
Dean Reyes elaborated, “We have a trading floor where students manage real money called the Barker Capital Management and Trading Program. We have a student business fund called the Davis Investment Group. We have a student‐operated consulting business called Vandal Solutions that provides marketing and other services to businesses and organizations in northern Idaho and western Washington.”
The CBE’s hands‐on programs push students to think outside the box and look at problems faced by real businesses. It is this emotional intelligence for which University of Idaho business students have become highly valued by employers.
International students are well represented at the college. The CBE facilitates numerous study abroad programs and faculty‐led excursions overseas. Associate Dean Daniel Borgia would like to see the CBE’s relationship with Brazil expand: “Although Brazilians are the CBE’s second largest international student group, we would like to increase the number of Brazilian students in our college and establish partnerships with Brazilian universities.”
Presently, many Brazilian students are enrolled through the University of Idaho’s Science without Borders program. However, the College of Business and Economics strongly encourages Brazilian and other international students to pursue their entire business degree at the University of Idaho at the undergraduate or graduate levels. In addition to undergraduate programs such as Marketing, popular paths include the Executive MBA and the Master of Accountancy.
