California State University – Northridge

California State University, Northridge: University Pathways for International Students

California State University, Northridge (CSUN) maximizes student opportunities while providing a welcoming study environment. With a quiet, palm-tree-dotted campus, the university offers excellent language instruction and a variety of student activities just 20 kilometres away from Hollywood.

A Pathway to the University

With state-of-the-art language laboratories, small classes, and a widely respected curriculum, CSUN’s Intensive English Program (IEP) expertly prepares language students for academic success. All IEP instructors have master’s degrees and are full university faculty members. Student support includes free after-class tutoring. To further facilitate students’ academic aspirations, advanced IEP students can enroll in university credit courses while completing their IEP studies and can also continue their US studies by enrolling in the Semester Abroad program. The IEP offers five start dates each year, including a popular option from mid-March through July, preparing students to enroll in American universities in the fall. CSUN is an official TOEFL test center, and IEP students have priority booking for tests. Conditional admission and TOEFL waivers are available for students who are enrolling at CSUN or partnering institutions in a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

A New Campus Home

In the fall of 2016, the IEP will open an entirely new building for the program. It features energy efficiency, an environmentally friendly design, and will add brand new classrooms for language study on CSUN’s campus. The new building will further the IEP goal of full student integration into campus life. IEP students are automatic members of CSUN’s Student Union, giving them access to over 325 clubs—from culinary to basketball. The campus performing arts center produces dozens of theater performances, concerts, and ballets each semester. IEP students also have the option of shared apartment-style, on-campus housing with on-site swimming pools and sports facilities.

Welcome and Support

A large number of Brazilian students currently make CSUN their home through the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP), in addition to Brazilian students who are currently enrolled in the regular IEP program. International Programs and Outreach Manager, Vanessa Andrade, travels to Brazil twice each year to maintain connections with universities and students there. Ms. Andrade elaborated, “I am here to support our students. I speak Portuguese and understand Brazilian culture. This is a real benefit to students because it means I understand where they are coming from.”

Student Testimonial

Karen Tauil, Brazil: “I was impressed by CSUN’s structure. It’s awesome knowing people from many different nationalities. The best thing is to experience life in an American university and improve my English. It’s much easier to learn a new language when you get immersed in a culture and have to communicate with speakers.”
