The American Language Program at Columbia University: Learning English at an Ivy League University in New York City
Known around the globe, Columbia University is a private research university in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City. Their renowned American Language Program (ALP) is the oldest in the United States, having been in operation for more than 100 years.
An Ivy League University
As an Ivy League school and leading academic institution, Columbia attracts a world-class faculty — many of whom hold PhDs and are published in their field. Students receive a core curriculum developed by a small group of instructors , aimed to maximize language progress to be able to compete with native speakers. In addition ALP participants receive student IDs and are fully integrated into campus life. Although centrally located in Upper Manhattan, Columbia’s campus maintains a community feel that makes for an authentic American university experience.
A World-Class City
With one of the world’s greatest global cities as its backdrop, Columbia makes New York City a crucial component of its programs. Learning about American culture and about the city grants students opportunities for growth and experience that extend beyond the classroom. New York City attracts a wide range of students and the university maintains strong ties to Brazil. The American Language Program has helped a number of Brazilian students transition into the academic programs at Columbia, which sets a high bar with a 100 TOEFL score requirement.
A Personalized Approach to Mastering English
ALP students are placed within one of nine levels of instruction, catering to a wide range of student abilities. With a distinctive small class size of 12-15 students, professors are able to grant individual attention in the classroom. Critical thinking and integrated skills are at the forefront of every class, pushing students to think for themselves.
“The ALP not only helps students improve their English but provides them with the tools they need to succeed at the university level,” said Director of International Initiatives School of Continuing Education, Sharon Kim. English for professional purposes, academic writing courses, and an intensive summer program are just a few of Columbia ALP’s many offerings.
