English Language Institute

Notre Dame of Maryland University’s English Language Institute (ELI) provides a quality, intensive English language program for non-native speakers who plan to study in American colleges and universities. There are five eight-week sessions starting in January, March, June, August, and October. Students from 20-25 different countries attend each session, but the average class size of 10 to 12 students allows for personal interaction with ELI’s devoted and experienced faculty.

ELI’s academic program is designed for all levels of English proficiency. Full-time students take required courses in:

• Writing and Grammar

• Reading and Discussion

• Listening and Speaking

• Pronunciation (or TOEFL Preparation)

• Vocabulary (or TOEFL Preparation)

The ELI offers electives in areas such as Service Learning and American Culture. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Conversation Partner Program.

Living and Learning English in Baltimore

Located on a beautiful 58-acre campus in a safe, residential area of Baltimore, Notre Dame of Maryland University is close to cities such as Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Annapolis, and New York City. Because the university values learning inside and outside of the classroom, ELI activities help students learn about American life and culture. In addition to field trips to nearby cities, theme parks, and museums, the ELI plans holiday parties and helps students connect with the wider university community.

Notre Dame offers on-campus housing and dining plans. Students have full access to the university’s facilities, including the Language Learning Center, Writing Center, Tutoring Center, the library, and the fitness center. ELI students are welcome to participate in all campus-wide events and lectures.

If students need assistance adjusting to life in the US, the ELI staff is there to help. The supportive environment makes each student’s stay a memorable learning experience.

Further Study at Notre Dame of Maryland University

After completion of the ELI program, students are encouraged to apply for further study at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Notre Dame of Maryland University offers part-time study at the undergraduate or graduate level for men and women, and full-time study through the graduate level Pharm.D. program for men and women or the undergraduate Women’s College.

The Women’s College offers:

29 dynamic majors

• a variety of clubs and organisations, cultural events, lectures, and other activities

• the ability to play multiple sports

• student research opportunities
