We are Penn State …We Want You to be Penn State Too!
Students wanting to improve their English language skills while preparing to enter an American institution of higher education will find the Intensive English Communication Program (IECP) at the Pennsylvania State University a great place to learn. As a part of a phenomenal research university well known for its engineering, business, science, agriculture, and high-tech innovations, this program offers a cutting-edge curriculum and specialized instruction within a thriving college setting.
The IECP faculty, all of whom have master’s degrees and at least three years of instructional experience, teaches students English while exposing them to the academic culture in the US. The curriculum integrates reading, writing, oral communication, and grammar with content-based courses in both science and the humanities. In addition, beginning fall 2015, students can elect to take a TOEFL or IELTS preparation course.
This comprehensive approach affords students opportunities to learn and practice English, prepare for university studies, and become acclimated to an American classroom. Students in the IECP can even observe university classes in their future major. The IECP offers four levels of English instruction and once students pass the advanced level, they may repeat two courses and enroll in non-credit and non-degree classes at Penn State.
Specialized English Instruction
Although the primary component of the IECP is academic coursework, the program also provides students exclusive access to tutors who assist in augmenting classroom instruction in specific areas.
Workshops dedicated to enhancing student learning are also offered; these opportunities focus on TOEFL/IELTS preparation, grammar, spelling, and pronunciation. In combination, these elements are designed to ensure that students are proficient in English and successful when taking the TOEFL or IELTS. For students interested in attending Penn State, and who are close, but unable to pass the TOEFL or IELTS, the program may grant certification, which satisfies the university’s English proficiency requirement.
Vibrant Campus Culture
Located in University Park, Pennsylvania, Penn State University boasts a beautiful campus and is home to one of the proudest student bodies in the country. It is a global community that welcomes enthusiastic learners from around the world. The energy and excitement of Brazilian students, in particular, has been exceptionally important to the university.
As Academic Coordinator and Lecturer in Applied Linguistics, Jacqueline Gianico said, “We are Penn State, and we want Brazilian students to be Penn State too.”
