Study in the Heart of Silicon Valley at San Jose State University
Students at San Jose State University (SJSU) not only benefit from the location in Silicon Valley, they also enjoy over 130 different degree programs and a bustling, diverse student community. SJSU is an ideal setting for academic achievement, social life, career development, and personal growth for international students seeking improved English language skills.
Celebrating 40 Years
Since its first intensive English program in 1975, SJSU’s International Gateways Program has educated thousands of students from over 60 countries around the world.
English Programs to Meet Students’ Needs
The Gateways program has developed programs that utilize SJSU’s resources to best meet the needs of international students.
The most popular program is the Academic and Test Prep English program, which is offered for full semesters (17 weeks) or in shorter 9-week sessions. The program features intensive instruction at eight proficiency levels, and is customizable through elective classes and concurrent enrollment opportunities for advanced students.
A 5-week language and culture course, Active Communication in English, is also available each summer. The next program is June 27- July 29, 2016.
The Semester at SJSU program allows international students to enroll in up to two semesters of undergraduate classes without formally applying to the university. Students experience American university life, expand their skills, and gain transferable credit.
A conditional admissions program caters to students who desire to enroll formally at SJSU, allowing them to raise their TOEFL or IELTS scores while studying at International Gateways.
The MBA Preparation Program caters to advanced English speakers who need specific preparation for the GMAT or GRE tests. Tailored courses are a bridge for future business leaders and their MBA ambitions.
International Gateways provides abundant activities for both academic and social student engagement. Groups take field trips to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, redwood forests, and more. Soccer games are arranged for international students and parties are scheduled around American holidays. A conversation club and cultural exchange program ensure students have opportunities to connect with American students while exchanging skills and knowledge.
Beyond these programs specifically designed by International Gateways, students can access the vast array of athletic opportunities, arts and cultural activities, and student organizations on the SJSU campus.
International Gateways students have a variety of housing options for their stay, including campus dormitories, apartments, or with homestay families [http://isphomestays.com] arranged through International Student Placements.
Silicon Valley Opportunities
SJSU’s location in Silicon Valley allows for abundant opportunities for students to connect with tech industry businesses during their studies. “We have weekly speaker presentations for SJSU students,” said International Gateways Director Sarah McGregor. “Speakers come from companies like Intel and Google to answer questions and present on industry topics. This is the perfect place for international students.”
