SUNY Albany Paves the Way to Academic Success in the US

For students looking to study at an American university, the State University of New York at Albany, also known as the University at Albany (UAlbany), is a great choice. Its Intensive English Language Program (IELP) provides the academic English language skills required to succeed in your chosen degree program.

Brazilian students may already be familiar with SUNY Albany, as a leading public research university with over 200 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs and a long history of partnerships with Brazil.

Located in the capital city of New York State, the campus is conveniently situated just three hours from New York City and Boston, so students can explore these famous cities during their leisure time without the stress and extra cost of living in a crowded metropolitan area.

Year-round Start Dates Accommodate Different Schedules

IELP offers two 16-week ESL programs that coincide with the Fall and Spring semesters, as well as an 8-week summer session. Students take language tests to ensure proper placement in one of six levels. Students admitted to UAlbany can take advantage of the month-long Summer Academic Institute (SAI). This is an excellent opportunity to get to know the campus and fine-tune academic English skills before school starts in the fall.

IELP Eases Transition to American Universities

“We are a college preparation program. We have been around for 37 years, and we are a member of UCIEP, the consortium of the top university and college-based intensive English programs in the US,” pointed out Vice Provost for International Education, Ray Bromley.

Indeed, the majority of IELP students plan to study at American universities and IELP’s highly qualified professors can help them achieve these goals; all hold master’s degrees or PhDs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, linguistics, education, or related fields.

Students wishing to earn degrees at SUNY Albany can benefit from a conditional admission arrangement. “Typically about 70% of our student body each semester have been conditionally admitted to UAlbany, we do everything we can to prepare these students to transition smoothly into their academic classes,” commented IELP Director Linda Leary. She added, “In addition to developing English skills, we want our students to be familiar with American culture and the US university system. Should a student wish to attend another school in the US, we help them with the transfer process. Our comprehensive academic language preparation gives students skills, contacts, and experiences that help them enter their university of choice.”

A True Taste of American College Life

IELP students study in the heart of the campus and have access to all facilities including libraries, computer labs, restaurants, athletic facilities, and dormitories. Excursions, cultural activities, and guest speakers also provide insight into the American university experience. “If you are preparing to enter university, the more you become involved in university culture, the better,” concluded Dr. Bromley.
