Learning English by the Sea at The University of California, San Diego
Located on the stunning coast of sunny Southern California, The University of California – San Diego (UC San Diego) provides a welcoming atmosphere and rigorous academic environment for those interested in learning English in the United States.
The UC San Diego Extension International Programs enable students to study English in a variety of courses, ranging from four to ten weeks in length. The breadth of programs includes Intensive TOEFL, Business English, Medical English, Conversation and Fluency, University Preparation Academy, Academic and Intensive Legal English.
External Relations and Partner Development Manager, Gwendolyne Guzman Rose stated, “For our Medical English program, we have access to a wide variety of university research, local healthcare facilities, and guest speakers, which contributes to a better, and more well-rounded perspective on patient and healthcare provider interaction within the US. In our Intensive Legal English Program, our qualified Intensive Legal English participants are offered conditional admissions for an LLM degree with the Californian Western School of Law.”
The Inside Advantage
Extension International Program students learning English at UC San Diego have the added benefit of being able to network with professors, and seek guidance on applying to full-time academic programs at the university.
Explained Ms. Rose, “Through the University and Preparation Academy, we assist students on how to apply to graduate degree programs, and even advise them on how to reach out to professors if they are looking for PhD and master’s programs.” Students even receive guidance on how to write strong research papers, a skill that puts them ahead of the game upon entering graduate school.
English language students at the UC San Diego Extension International Programs have numerous opportunities to maximize their American cultural experience, such as excursions to nearby Southern California attractions. Students may choose to live on campus during the months of June through September in campus apartments, hotels near campus, or with local host families.
The Application Process
English is taught at 12 levels and students take a thorough on-site test to assess their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. “In the 10-week programs, each student has a tailored program—as tailored as we can get it to their skill sets,” commented Ms. Rose. The department works with each student to determine the programs of study to ensure a successful experience.
The Bottom Line
CEA accredited by the US Department of Education, the UC San Diego Extension International Programs provide an excellent means for international students to learn English in the United States. Working with students, families, and universities worldwide, the multilingual staff looks forward to forging new partnerships with universities and welcoming students to experience beautiful San Diego at a world-class university.
Danilo Gasques Rodrigues, Brazil:
“The UC San Diego UPS program brought me close to the greatest minds in the Computer Science field. Several innovations in this field were developed by UC San Diego’s Professors or former students. Therefore, studying with these intellectuals not only improved my skills, but also inspired me to apply for Academic Training (for J-1 visa holders, similar to OPT). This summer I’ll be part of a research project that uses multidisciplinary concepts from Computer Sciences, Arts, and Social Sciences in order to apply visualisation algorithms to study crowds.”
