University of Delaware English Language Institute: A Proven Leader in Intensive English Learning
Located in Newark, Delaware – within two hours of Washington, D.C. and New York City – the University of Delaware is one of the oldest universities in the United States and is often recognized as having one of the top intensive English programs in the country. With resources such as private tutoring and a supportive campus community, The University of Delaware draws international students from over 100 countries, with more than 35 countries represented in the English Language Institute (ELI) alone.
A Leader in ESL Teaching
The ELI is known worldwide for its high quality and leadership in the field of English as a second language (ESL). All faculty holds a minimum of a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and/or Linguistics. In fact, many ESL teachers from around the world come to the University of Delaware to learn the latest, most advanced methods of teaching ESL.
As such, the curriculum is highly specialized, supporting students at all levels and for all purposes. International students can choose to focus their studies in specializations such as Business English, Academic English, Legal English, English through American Culture, and more.
Students can choose either the Intensive English Program with one of these specializations, or the Conditional Admissions Program for Academic English. The Conditional Admissions Program allows for students to enter a number of universities, including the University of Delaware, without a TOEFL score after they have completed the highest English level at the English Language Institute. This program prepares students not only for university-level English, but also for the academic and cultural skills needed for success at an American university.
Unparalleled Student Support
The University of Delaware provides unmatched academic and cultural support for students. Private tutoring is included in the intensive language program and is free to use. With an emphasis on small class size, students have access to top instructors and the latest technologies in ESL, including a multimedia library and listening center. Also, Delaware’s ELI is one of the few institutes to offer scholarships.
A ‘Home for Excellence in English Language Instruction’
Beyond classroom learning, the university also has a cultural program in place, with activities facilitating greater language and culture immersion. Also, with Washington, D.C., New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore no further than two hours away, students have access to major US cities on the East Coast.
Housing arrangements include campus apartments or homestays with local families. “We really like to communicate ourselves not only as a place of excellence, but as a second-family for our students,” said Director of the English Language Institute, Dr. Scott G. Stevens. “There’s a culture of warm, inviting, and supporting community. Students can flourish and make that adjustment to the new culture and new language with ease.”
With a longstanding tradition of welcoming both Brazilian students and teachers, the university recently announced plans to open an office on site in September 2015 in Salvador, Brazil.
