University of Southern California (USC)

International Academy – Top-Ranked for International Students

The University of Southern California in Los Angeles is one of the world’s leading private research universities and has been ranked a top destination for international students for more than 12 years.

The International Academy

From Intensive English programs to graduate student preparation, USC’s International Academy offers one of the best and most comprehensive language programs in the United States. Each year, students and professionals from around the globe immerse themselves in language and culture while taking advantage of the opportunities offered in their LA setting.

International students are fully immersed in USC student life. They have access to all facilities and resources. Some offerings include Visions and Voices Initiative (world-class cultural events on campus), sporting events (NCAA Division), conversation group language labs with USC students, and student organizations.

The academy is celebrating the grand opening of its new building this September, putting students even closer to the center of campus life. The building—just  steps from student apartments, campus libraries, and restaurants will include classrooms, faculty and staff offices, and its very own courtyard for social and cultural activities.

The Intensive English Program

Six annual start dates include a four-week timetable designed to accommodate Brazilian students for their summer vacation. Eighteen Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) students are attending USC this summer.

Elective classes include TOEFL and IELTS prep courses, as well as English for STEM, Business English, Journalism, Life in Los Angeles, and English through Film.

A Variety of Programs

Beyond the Intensive English program, the USC International Academy features programs to accommodate students at all points in their academic journeys. Pre-undergraduate students earn up to 12 academic credits while preparing to apply for degrees with the support of USC admissions staff and facilitators.

At the master’s level, language skills are augmented by staff support in all aspects of admission to American universities, including exam preparation, application support, and interview training. Language tracks feature science, technology, and health fields as well as business, social science, and art. Academically focused courses include Academic Reading and Writing, Research Methods, and Graduate Communication.

USC’s program is prestigious and widely recognised, giving students an edge in elite school applications, sometimes without requiring the TOEFL or IELTS.

Los Angeles and USC

Students live in campus dormitories, have access to the top-tier research professors, and participate in cultural excursions in Los Angeles. The city offers students virtually limitless opportunities for academic and professional development, cultural engagement, and recreation.

USC boasts the country’s top Cinema School. Movies and commercials are frequently shot on campus. Musicians, screen writers, and film industry executives regularly visit campus for student events. These Hollywood connections have proven invaluable to many students interested in careers in the arts.

Some notable Trojans (the name for USC alumni) include Neil Armstrong, Louis Zamperini, George Lucas, J. Paul Getty, Andrew J. Viterbi, and Frank Gehry.
