University Pathways: How to study in the US if Your English Isn’t Quite Perfect

Dreaming of getting your degree in the US, but afraid your English skills aren’t quite good enough to handle challenging academic courses? Want to get your foot in the door at a university while brushing up on your English? Luckily, many US universities offer Pathway programs that provide conditional admissions for ESL students who want to transfer to a degree program after completing an ESL program.

International students enrolled in private, off-campus ESL schools will be pleased to find that many of these schools have pathway agreements with several universities, so ESL graduates can take their pick.

For example, the American English College, located in Los Angeles, California, has agreements with several local community colleges, as well as specialized schools in film and the arts.

At Clark University’s American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI), students who have mastered a sufficient level of English may transition to the degree programs at Clark. Located in Worcester, Massachusetts, a typical New England college, ALCI also offers TOEFL preparation, public speaking, and business English.

Over 90% of University of Illinois – Springfield’s students completing the ESL program successfully matriculate into undergraduate and graduate degrees at the university, which is known for its top programs in the sciences and liberal arts.

The English Language Training Institute at University of North Carolina offers conditional admissions to undergraduate students so students can join ELTI, knowing that once they advance their language proficiency, admission to UNC Charlotte is already guaranteed.

FLS International is a family-owned network of English language schools with seven locations and homestays at every location. FLS is proud to maintain partnerships with colleges across the country.

The Language Company (TLC) – South Bend, is located in the major university town of South Bend, Indiana and is home to ten colleges and universities, providing a variety of options to ESL graduates who want to stay in the area.

ESL students at Colorado State University can prepare for their university transition by living in the unique Global Village Learning Community, an educational and residential environment that brings together international and local students.

Many ESL students at the University of Central Missouri take advantage of the Pathway program to transfer to the university’s robust STEM programs in fields such as aviation, civil engineering, or computer science.

Most university Pathway agreements will waive the TOEFL requirement for ESL students who successfully complete the final level of their ESL program. The transition is meant to be smooth and painless. These transitional ESL programs will get you up to speed so you can transfer to a US academic degree program in no time at all!
