Located in the welcoming city of Statesboro, Georgia Southern University’s English Language Program (ELP) mirrors the small city’s community-like atmosphere by providing international students with generous support and attention. “Our classes are never more than 15 students per class, so the students get a lot of individual attention. We do a lot of things outside the classroom as well, to have them become more a part of the community and the campus,” explained ELP Program Coordinator Lindsey Gile.
To feel at home in the Georgia Southern community, ELP students often participate in the university’s international club, Cross Cultural Friendship Program, and International Extended Families Program.
“The English Language Program is about developing yourself as a person and learning from the experiences of others. We strive to create this type of community for each of our students,” said Ms. Gile.
With a focus on academic English, the ELP prepares students to continue on to pursue degree programs at Georgia Southern or other universities in the US. The ELP works closely with international admissions and students may be conditionally admitted to programs at Georgia Southern. The ELP offers semester-long sessions as well as an 8-week summer session, and prides itself on offering affordable programs.
Whether pursuing English for Academic Purposes or Intensive English, students are offered the support necessary to help meet their goals. Students continuing on to Georgia Southern are often successfully admitted to programs including engineering, business, public health, and nursing. “Many international students stick around here from the ELP all the way up to their master’s, and sometimes to their PhD,” noted Ms. Gile.
ELP students enjoy the university’s 300+ student organizations, intramural sports, and state-of-the-art, eco-friendly facilities—including an award-winning recreation center and a modern library.
Students interested in off-campus adventures are excited to learn that Statesboro is only about an hour away from the beach and within driving distance of larger cities such as Savannah, Jacksonville, and Atlanta. Offering an ideal balance of living in a safe town with easy access to bustling metropolises, Georgia Southern is a welcoming place for international students looking for a truly American student experience.
“It is the best place to learn English. There is kind and experienced staff which helps make it a positive experience. The mood and atmosphere of the ELP is great,” said Rasmane Kabore, ELP student from Burkina Faso.
“I would recommend this great institute to those who want to get a quality education. It is also for students who wish to learn quickly to become fluent in English and want to pursue their education in any English speaking nation,” said Muhammed Kafeel ELP student from Pakistan.
