Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) was ranked “Top Community College in the US” by The Aspen Institute in 2013. The prestigious award was given on the basis of job placement, completion of vocational programs, and transfer success. Students frequently go on to the top schools in both the University of California and California State University systems, as well as private universities upon completion of their studies at SBCC.
And with one of the most scenic campuses on the California coast, it’s no wonder Santa Barbara City College is a favorite amongst students. The medium-sized beach town attracts over 50,000 students, including international students from all over the world. SBCC provides top-notch student support, strong academics, and a good quality of life.
Located an hour and half north of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States—known for its laid-back atmosphere and natural beauty. It’s also a student-centered city, and the college is located just steps from the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Student life is dynamic and filled with events and activities on- and off-campus.
The ESL Program at SBCC has five levels—ranging from beginning to advanced—in the core study areas of writing, reading, and grammar. Equipped with the latest technologies, facilities in all courses of study are top-notch and the campus continues to expand with new construction.
Student support is at the heart of the campus community. With 1,100 international students from 80 different countries, advisors are on hand to help students with cultural adjustment, academic counseling, and even the housing search. Many faculty have won state or national awards for excellence in teaching and student support.
Brazilians in particular have an established presence at SBCC. “We’ve had a long history of serving Brazilian students and I think the Brazilian students love the laid back atmosphere of Santa Barbara—it’s safe and easy to get around,” remarked Senior Director of International Programs, Carola Smith.
