Refresh your mind. Engage your spirit. Expand your horizons. If you’re looking for an education with soul, you’ve found it! Located in Honolulu, on the breathtaking island of O’ahu, the University of Hawai’i (UH) attracts dynamic students and faculty from all over the world.
As the largest university in Hawai’i (approximately 20,000 students), UH offers a multitude of educational opportunities —including 100 undergraduate majors, 85 master’s degrees, 58 doctoral degrees, an excellent University Preparation Program, and a well-renowned intensive English program called NICE (New Intensive Courses in English), which has been “teaching English with Aloha” for over 40 years. NICE and the University Preparation Program are both offered through UH’s Outreach College.
NICE focuses on English preparation for a variety of purposes. “It’s not just an academic program, it’s also a program for students who want to improve their English for jobs, business, or for personal reasons,” said International Programs Director, Judy Ensing.
A signature piece of the NICE curriculum is an informal interchange between peers, facilitated by an instructor. NICE students are matched up with UH students to practice English, learn about one other’s cultures, and form friendships.
Said Paula Pereira, a NICE graduate from Brazil, “[NICE] was very valuable to increase my English skills, which is being very helpful in my present and future work/personal goal. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to make many good friends from other countries and learn about their cultures.”
UP is a bridge program, designed to prepare international students for admission into and success in university degree programs. The two-semester program includes rigorous English study, test preparation, and both noncredit and for-credit coursework that can be applied to the student’s future degree program at the University of Hawai’i. Also, since UP is a bridge program, students enjoy conditional admission, personalized advising, and mentoring.
The vibrant city of Honolulu offers beautiful beaches, world-class shopping, scenic hikes, a flourishing art scene and nightlife, and much more. “Students can certainly experience American culture here, but they get a bonus because they also get Hawaiian culture integrated into everyday life,” said Ms. Ensing.
The International Programs division of Outreach College is excited to welcome new students to the dynamic UH campus as well as form partnerships with Latin American universities and study abroad agents. Concluded Ms. Ensing, “I think Latin American students will absolutely love Hawai’i—it’s a beautiful place to study and a wonderful place to live. It’s a place where you can get a great education.”
I'm very lucky to have chosen the NICE program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I improved my speaking, writing and reading skills. The UH has also delighted me since I started its program. It is so impressive with its architecturally designed buildings, and the lush trees which give a pleasurable environment, when we stroll around the magnificent campus. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to make many good friends from other countries and learn about their countries and cultures. I understood that even if we are born thousand miles away, in different countries, we all have certain similarities and a lot of interesting things to learn of each other’s cultures. I’m so happy that I spend this time at NICE program. It was very valuable to increase my English skills, which is being very helpful in my present and future work/personal goal. I want to say, Thank you NICE program.
