The English Language Training Institute (ELTI), the oldest and largest language program in North Carolina, is housed centrally on the University of North Carolina (UNC Charlotte) campus and offers year-round intensive English programs as well as customized short-term training programs and special academic preparation courses to international visitors.
ELTI hosts approximately 125 students each semester with class sizes averaging 12 to 15 students. The program curriculum focuses on academic study and preparation for success at US institutions of higher education.

Full-time students attend three classes daily (Reading/Writing, Listening/Speaking, and Academic Language) for approximately 20 contact hours per week and are placed in one of six levels after arrival on campus (ranging from beginning to advanced).
The university offers conditional admission to undergraduate students so students can join ELTI knowing that once they advance their language proficiency, admission to UNC Charlotte is already guaranteed. Advanced students are eligible for a Bridge program where they may take one or two academic courses alongside the language classes, starting their university degree early.
Apart from study, activities such as conversation practice with US students and language lab support allow students to practice their English in authentic settings. Furthermore, the university sponsors several trips each year to regional/cultural attractions and other activities and events at the university which hosts over 27,000 students from the US and over 100 countries.
Students can live on campus in residence halls, in an apartment near the university, or with homestay families. Due to the ELTI’s central location on campus, students enjoy all of the benefits of campus–access to the gym, basketball courts, swimming pool, movie theatre, health center, arts and athletic events, and participating in student clubs and special activities. It is all part of the experience!
UNC Charlotte has over 100 fields of study in bachelor’s, master’s, doctorates, and certificate programs. Popular programs include Business, Information Technology, and a variety of STEM-related fields.
