Balancing English Studies and Cultural Immersion

Founded in 1974, the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Hartford offers a range of programs for international students interested in improving their English skills and experiencing student life in the US. The institute is accredited and sessions are offered throughout the year, ranging from six to fifteen weeks in length.

Finding Your Place at the University

New international students are welcomed by the university’s International Center, which currently assists over 700 international students and scholars from around the world. Programs at the English Language Institute begin with an orientation and skills assessment to ensure students are placed in the appropriate skill level. Students spend 22 hours per week in the classroom, with additional private tutoring and independent learning sessions available.

Beyond the Classroom

The English Language Institute strives to provide an unforgettable experience both inside and outside the classroom. There are regularly organized picnics, outings to sporting events and musical performances, excursions to New York City, and more. The University of Hartford’s annual International Week brings together American and international students, as well as the university community, in a celebration of diversity that features international food, exhibits, and a parade.

After the ELI: What’s Next?

“I have lived some of the best moments in my life studying in the University of Hartford. It’s pretty cool to know that my year abroad wasn’t only for learning English. It was also a great experience to learn about other cultures, and grow as a better person,” said Miguel, a former ELI student from Spain. In addition to the unique cultural experience the University of Hartford offered, Miguel found that the English skills he gained helped him find a good job upon his return to Spain.

For international students wishing to continue their studies in the US, the ELI provides an excellent foundation in academic English. ELI students may apply for academic programs at the University of Hartford, including the school’s renowned business programs at the Barney School of Business.
