“We really try to group students in the level that’s best for them,” explained IELI Lead Instructor Gay Ann Kato. “We may put high level three students with lower level four students. The important thing is encouraging our students and boosting their learning.”

Classes average 10 students, further ensuring a family feeling and individualized attention.

Students can take advantage of the opportunity to waive the TOEFL or IELTS to enroll at UT Tyler if they have completed levels six or seven with high scores. UT Tyler’s engineering and medical programs are particularly popular with IELI’s students.

Specialty Language Programs

IELI offers specialty seminars in business, engineering, healthcare professions, tourism, and English for Teachers for groups interested in working together to improve their industry-focused language skills. IELI goes above and beyond to accommodate these groups: For example, in 2016, a group of Korean students participated in an accelerated spring course and IELI created a tailored course to fit their Tourism and Hospitality major.

“When we have a group coming for a special program, we look for any special interests or needs they might have,” explained Ms. Kato. “We adapt our curriculum or provide specialized content to best meet their needs.”

Getting Involved Outside the Classroom

UT Tyler values involvement and unity among the university community and it shows in its campus offerings. Students can choose to participate in over 100 clubs, organizations, and volunteer opportunities; an annual culture fest celebrating IELI students and other international connections; and Patriot Days, a week of fun student life and leadership activities on campus.
